Most Frequently Asked Questions about Phi Theta Kappa
-
Do I have to attend orientation to become a member?
No, you don't! Orientation is the most efficient way for members to tell eligible students about the club--its purpose, history, activities, and benefits for joining. So tell others you may know that it is not too late to join--we take membership applications throughout the year. Students can still pick up the information forms from the PTK office located in the Game Room in the Goins Building.
-
How much does it cost to join?
There is a one time, nonrefundable fee of $60.00.
-
I would like to join, but I don't feel I have the time. What should I do?
You can be as active as you want to be and still be a full member. We understand that your family, studies, and/or work may hinder your involvement with the club. Most of our officers have the same responsibilities. So there are no rules about how many activities you have to participate in or how many meetings you have to attend.
However, please realize that there are many ways you can be active--donate canned goods for the food basket; donate a gift or goodies to the Christmas party for the children at Lakeshore; bake cookies or brownies for chapter get-togethers; or hang flyers or posters around the college or in your neighborhood businesses to help publicize our activities. There are all kinds of things you can do!! Also, many of our activities are in the evenings or on different days of the week. So if you can't attend the chapter meetings, you can still be an active member. Contact your Chapter president to find out other ways to become involved.
-
Can I still join if I am only a part-time student?
Yes. To be invited to be a member, you must be working towards an associate degree, have at least 12 college-level credit hours and a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. As long as you are enrolled in at least one class, you can become a member.
-
I think I may take a semester off. Can I still be a member of Phi Theta Kappa?
You have to be enrolled in at least one college level hour to maintain membership. However, when you start back to school, we will be glad to reinstate your membership.
-
How would it benefit me to join if I plan to transfer to another college after this semester without graduating from Pellissippi State?
Well, you would have to weigh the advantages against the disadvantages.
ADVANTAGES
- Each Pellissippi State college transcript you send to another college will have the Phi Theta Kappa stamp on it;
- You can meet other Phi Theta Kappans who share you motivation, interests, and values and perhaps, make some new friends;
- Being a member of an honor society looks really great on your resume;
- You will receive an 8"X11" certificate of membership and pocket card from national headquarters along with other publications such as "3.5 PLUS" and a scholarship directory for members;
- You can become involved in projects that give you a sense of accomplishment or that make you feel good about helping others;
- Only 10% of all students enrolled in two-year college systems have the qualifications to join Phi Theta Kappa. You should be proud of your achievements and joining Phi Theta Kappa is a way for you to be recognized for your academic excellence.
DISADVANTAGES
- I really can't think of any besides the money.
-
I was a Phi Theta Kappa member at another college. Can I join your chapter?
Yes!! We would like to have you join us. We are always interested in hearing about other chapters and their activities. You would need to show me or a co-advisor your certificate of membership that you reviewed and one of us will complete the paperwork to make you a member of Alpha Theta Xi. There is a $10.00 fee due upon joining the Chapter.

What happens if I drop below the 3.25 gpa? Will you kick me out of PTK?
No. Remember that we do not look at the "current" gpa for the semester just completed. We look at the cumulative gpa- your overall average of all courses completed while attending Pellissippi State. We know that students often have a rough semester and may not make the grades needed to maintain a 3.25 cumulative gpa. If you should fall below a 3.25 gpa, you will have one semester to raise your gpa back up. The chapter will try to help you with tutoring if you need help. If you fall below during your last semester, then you will still graduate or transfer as a Phi Theta Kappa member.
