Many of you may wonder why you haven't been able to contact Dr. Pat Shivers, OST-HCOA Associate Professor. During the summer semester, Dr. Shivers decided to make a career change that took effect August 15, 2003. Her new career in retirement allows her to have more time to enjoy her avocations - family, golf, flower gardening, and travel - while maintaining her involvement in health care.
Pat is also working part-time for a small company in Knoxville called Kinetech, Inc., where she is responsible for the company's Web site as well as the promotion of its major product, the Quadriciser exercise apparatus. The Quadriciser is a relatively new machine that enables a patient with neurological disorders such as a stroke or spinal cord injury to exercise, strengthen, and stretch all four extremities and the related muscles. The major advantage is that the patient is in control of the amount of effort exerted but is supported in his efforts by the weights and pulley system of the machine. Pat hopes the Web site will help to persuade physicians, physical therapists, as well as patients of the value of the Quadriciser in improving patient motor function. The job has flexible hours which allows time for the other activities Pat enjoys. She is excited about this new venture but misses the students and friends at PSTCC.
