Pellissippi State AmeriCorps VISTA Program

Pellissippi State's AmeriCorps VISTA Program assists the college and community partners with their goals related to local healthy food access, sustainable living, nutrition education, economic opportunity, and community school support. All seven VISTAs involve Pellissippi State college students in their efforts.

The Pellissippi State AmeriCorps VISTA Program includes the following projects:

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee: This AmeriCorps VISTA sponsored by Pellissippi State is developing nutrition education opportunities, a Healthy Harvest farmer's market donation program, and an on site garden program at Second Harvest.  For additional information, contact Kendra at kendra@secondharvestetn.org.

UACS Pond Gap Elementary: This is the third year of PSCC AmeriCorps VISTA support for Pond Gap's school garden initiative.  The garden provides food to Pond Gap children and families while offering hands-on learning experiences and therapeutic sensory activities.  This year, the AmeriCorps VISTA is working to integrate the garden into curriculum with faculty and staff of Pond Gap. Contact pondgapgarden@gmail.com for more information.

Great Schools Partnership: This AmeriCorps VISTA project mission involves establishing community gardens at three Knox County schools.  Contact service-learning@pstcc.edu for more information.

Pellissippi Pantry: With the help of AmeriCorps VISTA, this five-campus online food pantry seeks to alleviate food access challenges faced by financially challenged students, employees, and their families.  The pantry provides participants with nutritiously rich and balanced food sources including fresh, organic produce harvested from the Hardin Valley Campus Garden.  Contact ppantry@pstcc.edu for more information.

Hardin Valley Campus Garden: The AmeriCorps VISTA assigned to Hardin Valley Campus Garden will help increase the production, resources, and student, staff, and faculty participation in the garden through volunteerism and service-learning projects.  Contact e_jdburnette@pstcc.edu for additional information.

Pellissippi State Magnolia Ave. Campus: This exciting new AmeriCorps VISTA project is piloting helpful literacy programming for PSCC students who want to learn how to be savvy with their money.  In addition, this VISTA is developing a Community Coalition of business partners supportive of PSCC students.  Contact Patrick at pwdavis1@pstcc.edu for details.

Project GRAD-Knoxville: #YEP (Youth Entrepreneur Program) This PSCC AmeriCorps VISTA is capacity building a mentoring program connecting entrepreneurial Austin-East and Fulton High seniors with successful Knoxville-area entrepreneurs who are mentoring the students with business skills so they can lunch their own successful companies in downtown Knoxville.  For more information, contact Natoisha at natoishacurry@yahoo.com
