AmeriCorps VISTA Projects

Pellissippi State serves as a project supervisor for AmeriCorps VISTA members. Through our partnership with AmeriCorps VISTA we are able to support programs on campus and in local non-profits to meet the needs of their communities. This year’s projects include:

Those interesed in volunteering at either the Hardin Valley Campus Garden or the Pellissippi Pantry may e-mail J.D. Burnette to be placed on our weekly volunteer opportunity list.

Hardin Valley Campus Garden

The Hardin Valley Campus Garden uses organic, permaculture-inspired gardening practices to produce food eleven months of the year. Most of this produce benefits the Pellissippi Pantry, which provides food support to students in need.

The garden emphasizes East Tennessee’s foodways — the crossroads of food in culture, traditions, and history, from seed saving to cultivation of heirloom crops, from preserving and canning to cooking with regional recipes and techniques.

Students can volunteer in the garden and by collecting compostable waste from the cafeteria to create rich soil for the garden beds. You can also donate organic and heirloom seeds for the garden to the library.

Support the Hardin Valley Campus Garden

The Hardin Valley Campus Garden is sponsored by Service-Learning and its AmeriCorps VISTA initiative, and is a core project of the UT Extension’s Knox County Master Gardeners Program.

The garden is sustained solely by donations. Give today.

Pellissippi Pantry

The Pellissippi Pantry provides access to healthy foods for students in need. Every two weeks, participants can receive free supplemental packaged and fresh food.

How the Service Works

Participants in the service complete food order forms — which account for any food preferences or allergies — and can then pick up their biweekly packages of food at the Pellissippi State campus of their choice. To help maintain confidentiality, Pellissippi Pantry staff and volunteers fill orders by ID number rather than by name. Students can request an application by emailing

Support the Pellissippi Pantry

The Pellissippi Pantry partners with the Hardin Valley Campus Garden, Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee and Knoxville’s Center for Urban Agriculture.

The pantry is sustained solely by donations. Give today.
