RecycleMania 2015

WHAT IS RECYCLEMANIA?

RecycleMania is a two-month competition (February and March) where Pellissippi State competes nationally and with Canadian four-year universities and two-year community colleges.

We are thrilled that, due to YOUR recycling efforts, this year we placed 55th in the competition, out of over 300 competing colleges and universities!

Click here to see which colleges did better than us, and also to see those that we “out-recycled”: http://recyclemaniacs.org/scoreboard/current-results/competition-division.

We placed second in the state of Tennessee. The other three Tennessee schools in the competition were UT-Knoxville, UT-Martin, and Walters State Community College. PSCC and WSCC were the only Tennessee community colleges that participated.

RECYCLEMANIA 2015 RESULTS

  • In the Gorilla Division, which calculates waste reduction by total pounds collected of recyclables and trash, PSCC came in 145th out of 308 colleges/universities, with 118,548 lbs. total collected paper, cardboard, cans, and bottles.
  • In the paper category, which is calculated by lbs. per student, PSCC came in 28th out of 107 colleges/universities, with 6.147 lbs. of paper collected per campus population (includes students, faculty, staff).
  • In the cardboard category, which is calculated by lbs. per student, PSCC came in 23rd of 118 colleges/universities, with 6.589 lbs. of cardboard collected per campus population (includes students, faculty, staff).
  • In the plastic and aluminum category, which is calculated by lbs. per student, PSCC came in 24th out of 104 colleges/universities, with 2.225 lbs. of bottles and cans per campus population (includes students, faculty, staff).

Next year we hope to compete in the Waste Minimization category as well as the Food Service Organics category. We believe that PSCC can be contenders for these categories as well.

We recycled the equivalent of 212 metric tons of CO2, taking 42 cars off the road, or the energy consumption of 18 households.

We are very proud of our results and the continual hard work and dedication our student recycling workers put into the weekly competition calculations and for regularly collecting and sorting recycling items.
