DSP Math
Course Description
DSPM 0890 is the developmental mathematics course that includes the study of integers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratio, proportions, measurements, real numbers, algebraic expressions, functions, linear equations and inequalities, graphing, systems of linear equations and inequalities, quadratic functions and their graphs, polynomial expressions, quadratic equations, rational expressions and equations and related applications.
Required Materials
The required software product is Carnegie Learning and the required calculator is the TI—83 or 84 graphics calculator.
Course Content
The course is divided into 10 modules:
- I Can Learn Math
- Fractions
- Decimals
- Introduction to Algebra
- Linear Equations and Inequalities in One Variable
- Linear Equations and Inequalities in Two Variables
- Systems of Linear Equations
- Polynomials
- Quadratic Functions and Equations
- Rational Functions and Equations
Module 0 emphasizes student ’s learning styles, time management, and study and test—taking skills.
Each mathematics module includes a learning style activity, Carnegie Learning software units, a review assignment, and a module test.
Placement in Modules
New students start in the module determined by the Confirmation Test. Returning students start with the first of their remaining uncompleted modules from the previous semester.
Working in Modules
Students work through each required module with the aid of the computer software, the instructor, and the tutors in the Math Center. Students work through the required modules as quickly as possible.
Grades
Students must complete at least 3 modules by the end of the semester to receive a grade of A, B, or C for the course.
Attendance Policy
The attendance policy for DSPM is the same as for the college; students must be present for 75% of the scheduled class days. Students are required to spend 2 additional hours in the Math Center each week beyond the scheduled class meetings for a 14 week semester.
