Mission Statement
The mission of the Transitional Studies Department at Pellissippi State Community College is to provide students the opportunity to develop the foundational skills in reading, writing, mathematics, English, and self-management necessary to be successful in a college-level curriculum that will enable them to achieve their educational goals and to pursue life-long learning.
The Transitional Studies Department offers classes in Learning Support English, Learning Support Math, Learning Support Reading, English as a Second Language, and College Success. Adult Education is available for prospective students pursuing a GED or basic education as a means of entry into the College. The department also provides Academic Testing services for enrolled students.
A Learning Commons staffed by committed faculty and trained tutors is located on each Pellissippi State campus. Learning Support students are expected to spend time working in the Learning Commons as part of class requirements. The design of Learning Support courses establishes an environment where students acquire, refine and restore essential college readiness skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, while cultivating the habits of mind crucial for college success.
Students enrolled in Learning Support are strongly encouraged to concurrently register for College Success (COLL 1500). This college-level credit course gives students the opportunity to discover a major, create a two-year plan, and learn vital time-management strategies as well as other techniques and self-management tools commonly recognized to lead to success in college and careers.
