Young Creative Writers Workshop


About The Workshop

The fourth annual Young Creative Writer's Workshop is a free, day-long event designed especially for area high school students interested in creative writing; however, this year, workshops will also be open to all interested Pellissippi students as well. The YCWW is sponsored by the Pellissippi State Foundation, the Tennessee Arts Commission and Papa John's Pizza. Fiction, poetry, performance, songwriting, screen-play writing and publication workshops will be provided in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Lunch is also provided to attendees free of charge.

Workshop leaders will consist of a combined team of Pellissippi instructors who are published writers and award-winning professional writers brought in from other parts of the state. Students will have the opportunity to meet and interact with PSCC professors, professional writers from other areas, students and staff. The Strawberry Plains PSCC Creative Writing Club will help to act as "ambassadors" for attendees and will assist in the workshops. At the end of the day, attendees may perform their original works at a "showcase" event to which family members and high school instructors are invited.

The schedule of activities is below. Attendees may attend all or part of the day's events, based on their needs and preferences.  

This year, the YCWW wishes to reach out to a more diverse audience and to those students who may have difficulty with transportation issues; therefore, we will be offering free transportation to and from our event at the following locations: Austin East High School, Fulton High School, and the Magnolia campus of Pellissippi State. The bus will collect students at the following times and locations: Fulton High School:  8:00 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.; PSCC Magnolia Avenue campus: 8:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m.; Austin East High School: 9:00 a.m. - 9:15 a.m.

New to this year's event will be our "Muse Café," a creative space completely dedicated to allowing our attendees to share their own experiences, processes, and sources of inspiration for writing, both in real time and through social media. Our "Muse Café" will feature specialty coffees and pastries, along with decor and music focused on a 60's coffee house theme. Also new this year will be our publication workshop, a workshop designed specifically to orient young writers to the basics of how to get their works published. Finally, the YCWW will host, for the first time, a keynote speaker: Ronni Chandler, the Director of Project Grad, who is also a professional, published writer. Ms. Chandler will share her own story as a writer and professional, as well as offer inspiration to our attendees.
