New Displays at the Library

The Pellissippi Library has two new displays in its Reference center!

To address Banned Books Week (September 23-30), we have set up a case with information on book challenges, and a selection of some of the most frequently challenged books. You can find more information on Banned Books Week from the American Library Association.

Also, on top of our New Books case, you can find a collection of books for Hispanic Heritage Month. This event runs from September 15-October 15. Come check out our selection of books relating to Hispanic culture! To learn more about this nationally-recognized celebration, visit the U.S. Census Bureau information page.

Audiobooks Provides Digital Alternative

Imagine taking multiple books on a long car or airplane trip, without the extra bulk; or taking in a few foreign language lessons while you clean your home; or finally finishing that engrossing novel on your next jog. Audiobooks makes this, and more, possible by providing a digital alternative to hard-copy books.

Pellissippi students, faculty, and staff can now checkout and download over 1,300 available Audiobooks titles. Audiobooks can be played on your computer or transferred to a portable listening device.

Take a look at what is available to you:

Pellissippi provides Audiobooks from NetLibrary, including a core collection of fiction and nonfiction, The Pimsleur Language Series, and the Contemporary English Version (CEV) Holy Bible. Audiobooks can be searched by title, author, subject, keyword, and publisher, and can also be browsed by genre or full collection.

To access Pellissippi's Audiobooks collection, visit our NetLibrary site or the Pellissippi Library's online catalog. Users will need to create a free NetLibrary account before downloading titles. After downloading, titles may be transferred to a portable listening device, such as portable music players, Pocket PCs, and some smartphone devices. (Please note that iPod does not currently support the Audiobooks file types; click here to find out if your device supports Audiobooks files).

To learn more about Audiobooks, visit Pellissippi's information page or read NetLibrary's Quick Start Guide. Contact reference librarian Rick Bower via email (rbower) or phone (539-7106) for more information.

Introducing Encyclopedia Britannica Online

Where can you check the daily news, catch up on your reading of great classical works, use an electronic dictionary and thesaurus, and access over 120,000 research articles all in one place?

You can do all this and more with Encyclopedia Britannica Online, which the Pellissippi Library is proud to introduce into its collection of online databases.

Take a look at the features available to you and find out where you can access Encyclopedia Britannica Online:

With Encyclopedia Britannica Online, students and faculty have access to a wealth of information at the tips of their fingers. Content is collected from two Britannica encyclopedias, multimedia (including photos, illustrations, audio and video files), journals and magazines (selected from EBSCO and ProQuest), and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus.

Users can search the database, or browse A-Z lists and Timelines. Also available are listings of the Web's best sites for different topics, a searchable collection of notable quotations, and the Gateway to the Classics, where users can browse or search for full-text collections of great classical works of literature.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online also keeps users up to date by adding current awareness features to its homepage. Daily news highlights from The New York Times, BBC News, and SBS World News are featured here, along with Britannica Highlights, the Biography of the Day, and This Day in History.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online can be accessed through the Online Databases section of the Pellissippi Library's homepage, or by going directly to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online homepage. Off-campus users will be prompted to enter their Pellissippi username and password to access online resources.
