Beginning in fall 2021, Pellissippi State Community College will offer an evening cohort for up to 24 students who want to earn their Associate of Science in Teaching in Elementary Education, K-5. The A.S.T. degree allows prospective teachers to transfer from Pellissippi State to any state university as juniors without a loss of credit.
Students in the evening cohort, which includes a mix of online and evening classes, will attend school part-time and can expect to graduate in eight semesters by taking two or three classes in fall, spring and summer terms.
In addition to completing the 20 classes included in the evening cohort curriculum, students must attain a cumulative grade point average of 2.75, successfully complete the Praxis Core exam or achieve an ACT superscore composite of 21 or higher and obtain three satisfactory letters of recommendations from faculty in order to graduate.
Both Education classes (EDU 2010 & EDU 2015) require a 15-hour Field Experience that must be completed during normal public school hours. Cohort members may need to adjust their work schedules to complete this requirement which cannot be done in the summer since local public schools are closed.
