Hold Harmless Agreement for MLK March in Blount County on January 16th 2023

Join Pellissippi State colleagues and students at the annual MLK Day March in Blount County, as Knoxville’s MLK Memorial Parade has moved to Juneteenth, June 19.

Participants will gather at 12:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at the MLK Community Center, 209 East Franklin Street, Alcoa, to march to Maryville College. The march is 3 miles long and can only be walked, notes Michael Hurst, chair of Pellissippi State’s MLK Committee. Students, employees, former employees and alumni are encouraged to participate.

Those who would like to carpool to Alcoa are invited to ride along in a State vehicle leaving from the front entrance of Facilities (the Physical Plant) on the College’s Hardin Valley Campus. Gather between 9:30 and 10 a.m. for a departure between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Space is limited to 13 riders.

Anyone under the age of 18 who plans to participate in the MLK March will need a parent or guardian signature on the Hold Harmless form linked above. Please send the completed form to mjhurst@pstcc.edu or bring it completed to the march the day of the event.

Those who would like to join a Pellissippi State team at the 27th Annual YWCA Race Against Racism at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, should contact Equity and Compliance Executive Director George Underwood to register. There is a $25 registration fee for this event, Underwood notes.

There are a couple of options: The 5K course route starts at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Community Center and takes runners through East Knoxville, down to the Old City and loops back at the starting line. Looking for something a little more laid-back? Join the 1-mile walk to the Alex Haley statue at Morningside Park.
