Enhance your personal safety through non-credit courses at Pellissippi State

“Increasing personal safety” can mean many things, including improving your driving skills or learning to safely operate a handgun.

The Business and Community Services Division of Pellissippi State Community College offers a variety of non-credit courses this summer to boost your personal safety. Offerings include the following:

  • “Handgun 101”—June 9, July 7 or Aug. 11, 6:30-9 p.m.; $35. This course covers a lot of ground in just 2.5 hours. Participants learn how to select, operate, clean and safely store a handgun. Additional topics include holster selection and other important gun-safety guidelines. The class provides a solid foundation for those who decide to take the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit Class. Both handgun instructors are certified by the National Rifle Association and the state of Tennessee.
  • “Driver Improvement Program”—June 13 and 14, July 11 and 12, Aug. 8 and 9 or Sept. 12 and 13, 5:30-9:30 p.m.; $50. Whether participants are being required by a court to attend a defensive driving class or just want to improve their driving skills, this eight-hour course is for them. The instructor is certified by AAA to teach the AAA Driver Improvement Program. Upon successful completion of the class, students receive a certificate that satisfies court and Tennessee Department of Safety requirements.
  • “Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit Class”—June 25, July 16 or Aug. 20, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, and June 4, July 23 or Aug. 6, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Blount County Campus, 2731 W. Lamar Alexander Pkwy.; $75, plus a $5 range fee payable to the instructor in class. (Register 10 days early for a $10 discount.) Students must furnish their own gun and ammunition. Upon successful completion of this course, participants are given the necessary certificate to apply for the state carry permit at their nearest Tennessee Department of Safety office. The instructor is certified by the NRA and the state of Tennessee.

Unless otherwise noted, all classes are at the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road.
